In chapter six of The Purpose Driven Church, Rick Warren says,
What do you think of the cross diagram as a way of symbolizing the fivefold purpose of the church?
Great leaders have always understood and harnessed the tremendous power of symbols. People often need visual representations of concepts in order to grasp them. Symbols can be powerful communication tools because they elicit strong passions and emotions.I agree. One symbol I am using to communicate the Fivefold Purpose of the Church we find in Acts 2:42-47 is the Cross. Here is what we read in that passage....
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. In this passage we read about the first Christians who enjoyed Jesus as the vital center of their lives. Thus I have pictured the name "Jesus" at the center of the cross in my diagram. Jesus communicates his word to us through the Bible, and particularly through the teaching of the apostles. Thus, teaching forms the downward arrow on the cross. We also see that the first Christians were devoted to fellowship, represented by one of the horizontal arrows on the cross. Furthermore, they devoted themselves to the breaking of bread (communion) and to prayer; these are aspects of worship which forms the upward arrow in my cross diagram. Finally, in Acts 2:42-47 we see how the first Christians served others as they had need in their community. Service forms another one of the horizontal arrows on the cross, along with outreach. Outreach, or evangelism, is the natural overflow of the heart and life that is filled with Jesus. We cannot help but tell others about Christ and share his love with them.
