I believe the key verse in these four chapters
is: “The Lord will provide.” (Genesis 22:14) In these chapters, we see the Lord
providing a son, Isaac, for Abraham and Sarah just as he promised. We also see
God providing for Hagar and Ishmael after they are cast out by Abraham and
Sarah (which was not a very nice thing to do on their part, to say the least).
We see God providing a ram for the sacrifice to take the place of Isaac. God
provides a place for Abraham to bury Sarah in a foreign land. And finally, God
provides a wife, Rebekah, for Abraham’s son Isaac.
Jesus says, “But strive first for the kingdom of
God and his righteousness, and all these things (food, shelter, clothing) will
be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)
Paul says, “And my God will fully satisfy every
need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians
4:19)
What is there that we need the Lord to provide as we begin a
new year? If it is something that is necessary for our good, and the good of
God’s kingdom, we can be sure that the Lord will provide it. After all, the
Lord has given us his Son as the sacrificial ram to take our place. “He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will
he not with him also give us everything else?” (Romans 8:32)
It is certain that there will be tests for us to
pass in the year ahead just as Abraham had to pass a test. As C. S. Lewis wisely
points out, God does not put us to the test so that he can find out whether we
will pass. God already knows. He puts us to the test so that we will find out
what our obedience can endure.
